Q: Do I really need a nonprofit to get paid from the USDA?

A: Yes. The USDA only reimburses nonprofits or schools, not individuals. That’s why we handle your registration and 501(c)(3) so you’re set up the right way from the start.

Q. How long does it take to get approved as a nonprofit?

A. Once we file, it usually takes the IRS 1-3 months to fully approve your 501(c)(3). The good news? You can still move forward with building your foundation, talking to vendors, and preparing for your USDA application during that time.

Q. How fast do I get paid once I start serving meals?

A. USDA payments usually run on a 30–45 day cycle. Example: You serve meals in September → you file your claim in early October → you get reimbursed late October or early November.

Q. How much does a food vendor usually charge per meal?

A. Most vendors charge between $2.50–$3.50 per meal. The USDA reimburses more than that, which is how your nonprofit makes money while serving kids.

Q. Can I do this in my state or is it just Georgia?

A. This program is nationwide. In Georgia, it’s called Bright from the Start. Other states have different agencies (Texas Department of Agriculture, California Department of Education, etc.). I’ll point you to the right contacts for your state.

Q: How fast can I launch my non profit on my own?

A: Many students start laying the foundation within the first week. Since it’s self-paced, you can move as fast or as slow as you need. Some launch in 45 days or less!
